Pull the plug on the PATRIOT Act!
Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the United States House of Representatives and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer
Twenty years ago, immediately after the attacks on 9/11, our Congress passed the PATRIOT Act with the goal of tightening national security. In a Legislative frenzy, this 128 page act was brought swiftly through our lawmaking process with little regard to its contents. In truth, this law increased federal power to spy on its own American citizens, damaged our ability to hold the government accountable for their actions and, at its most extreme, allowed the U.S. to detain its own people indefinitely without due process as ‘Illegal Enemy Combatants’.
Twenty years is too long for this oppressive law to hang over the heads of US citizens and residents. We need your help to pull the plug on the PATRIOT Act and restore our right to not be spied on by our government!
Leading up to the 20th anniversary of the signing of the PATRIOT Act, on October 26th, we will organize digital protests around the United States and the world. You can help by signing his petition and:
- Share this information with friends and family;
- Post your opposition to the PATRIOT Act with the hashtag #UnPatriotAct, especially starting on October 25th;
- Make memes about the PATRIOT Act and use the hashtag so we can share your work.
