Tell Tech Reviewers: Rescind Amazon Ring Recommendations

To the Editor,

Consumers across the country use your reviews to determine which products to buy. They depend on accurate information about the safety of devices for themselves and their loved ones. Amazon Ring devices are not safe. I call on you to honor the public confidence in your technology reviews and suspend your recommendation of Amazon Ring doorbell cameras.

Amazon Ring cameras threaten public safety and security while having a detrimental impact on society at large, and especially on Black and brown communities. These insecure devices have an ongoing history of hacks and leaks that leave users vulnerable to the whims of bad actors. Ring’s 1,500 partnerships with local police departments violate privacy rights. Cops in Jackson, Mississippi recently launched a pilot program that allows them to live stream footage from residents' Amazon Ring doorbell cameras. These programs put lives at risk: roughly half of the police departments partnered with Amazon “are responsible for over a third of fatal police encounters nationwide.”

For Black and brown communities plagued by police violence, Amazon Ring is a pipeline for arrests. Amazon’s Neighbors App facilitates racial profiling as users disproportionately send ‘strange or suspicious’ alerts to police for Black and brown individuals. This alongside police use of facial recognition, a software known for misidentifying Black and brown people, further criminalizes an already unjustly targeted population. As the nation grapples with police violence towards Black people, it’s important to not just declare solidarity but to stop endorsing tools that automate racism.

In light of everything that has been learned over the past 12 months about the dangers of Amazon Ring, it’s imperative you suspend your recommendation of Amazon Ring and update all relevant guides immediately. In doing so, you not only protect consumers but their loved ones and the public at large.

Thank you.
