Restore access to abortion care in Wisconsin
The Wisconsin courts, Governor Evers, and the WI legislature

There is currently a near-total ban on abortion in Wisconsin due to the 1849 law that went into effect after the overturning of Roe vs Wade. The law does not provide exemptions in the case of rape or incest and only provides a narrow exemption to save the life of the pregnant person. Any doctor who performs an abortion in Wisconsin can be charged with a felony, with a sentence of up to 6 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Because of this law and the possible prosecution of doctors, no abortions have been performed in Wisconsin since June 24th, 2022, unless approved necessary by two physicians to save the life of the pregnant person.
The Wisconsin state legislature has refused to overturn the abortion ban, despite there being a bill in the state legislature that would overturn it and increase abortion access, The Abortion Rights Preservation Act.
A ban on abortion affects everyone in Wisconsin, not just people who can get pregnant. Without access to full bodily autonomy and reproductive care, families will bear the economic strain of raising children without adequate resources. People in need of medication may not have access to important prescriptions unrelated to medical abortions. People seeking abortions in other states will lose time and money getting the care they require. Many people who would have built lives and careers in Wisconsin will reconsider and move elsewhere, damaging our state’s economy and the communities where we live.
Wisconsin people deserve agency over their reproductive choices. We call on the Wisconsin courts, Governor Evers, and the legislature to do the following:
Overturn 1849 law, thus reinstating legal abortion in Wisconsin
Remove medically unnecessary restrictions to abortion access
Put the state’s $6.8 billion budget surplus toward: 1) covering travel and childcare costs for pregnant persons in Wisconsin so they can access abortion in other states while the 1849 abortion ban remains in place; 2) protecting the freedom of all people, including children, to be themselves and pursue their dreams, no matter what they look like, how they identify, or where they come from.
