Rise Higher: Be the (S)Hero, Again!

Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield

Detroiters have borne the costs of illegally inflated property tax assessments for years, leading to displacement, property tax foreclosures, and deep distrust. Since the Coalition for Property Tax Justice was founded in 2016, Mayor Mary Sheffield has been one of our biggest supporters and allies. In 2023, she was one of our (s)heros on the City Council when she championed the Property Tax Reform Ordinance.

Mayor Sheffield’s Rise Higher Community Framework calls on the City to “update property taxes and property tax assessments to reduce tax burdens on residents and businesses.” Now, Mayor Sheffield has the opportunity to be the (s)hero, again by taking measurable steps to make Detroit’s property tax assessment system lawful and to begin the healing process for the harm done.
