Save International House

Lambeth Council, Sadiq Khan, Councillor Scarlett O'Hara, Councillor Donatus Anyanwu

Since 2018, 3Space has organically built something emblematic of Brixton’s tradition of community and care. Inside International House, 3Space has grown into London’s largest affordable workspace and a hub for community support, that over 100 charities and community organisations call their home.

These organisations, mainly Black and Global Majority-led, have been working relentlessly to provide support to our communities, many on reduced or peppercorn rent. From HIV awareness and mental health support, to youth crime prevention and refugee justice, they have been quietly serving Brixton for years. These organisations are not profit-driven. For many of the most marginalised in South London, they are their only thing protecting them from destitution.

Now, a proposal put forward by Lambeth Council and London Square threatens this ecosystem with eviction. In their proposal all these charities would be displaced - with many organisers revealing that they would be unable to continue their work outside of International House. In return, the plans would deliver luxury housing: the exact antithesis of what International House stands for. There is not enough affordable workspace in the whole of London to support so many organisations relocating at the same time, and neither London Square or Lambeth Council have announced a relocation strategy.

Change cannot continue at the expense of the people and organisations who have sustained our community, doing the hard work to support the most vulnerable in the context of 20 years of austerity. International House is more than a building. It is a refuge, and a symbol of community-led regeneration, resilience and wealth-building.

If these proposals go ahead, our communities stand to lose access to essential support in favour of a redevelopment that benefits the few, not the many. We cannot allow our community space to be dismantled, and we cannot allow those who serve us to be priced out of their very own neighbourhoods.
