Newham Libraries are a lifeline for our community. But the Council is thinking of slashing our library budget by 50%. This could mean closures, staff cuts, and service reductions.

Every week, Newham Libraries provide:

• IT classes, NHS outreach, coffee mornings and other vital social events for older residents

• Free internet access and face-to-face help navigating complex housing, benefits, and disability systems

• The joy of discovering books and reading to all, regardless of income

• Children’s programs and summer activities — from coding and crafts to chess and rhyme time

• A warm, safe space for people who can’t afford to heat their homes

• Free fitness sessions like yoga, Zumba, and Tai Chi for all

• Quiet study spaces for teenagers

• A welcoming haven for homeless people, refugees, and asylum seekers

• Free sim data and devices for people shut out of the digital world

• A place for all of us to combat loneliness and build community

We live in one of the most disadvantaged boroughs in the UK, with 45% of children in poverty and many adults without proper internet access. Newham residents need libraries.

Libraries reduce isolation, and provide access to essential services for those in need. Libraries save the Council money by easing pressure on health and social services.

Resist the Library Cuts!

Cutting libraries is a political choice. In Spring 2026 Newham's councillors will be asking for our votes in the local elections. If enough of us act together we can make cutting libraries impossible. We hope this petition is just the beginning.
