SF small businesses need our help!

Even before the COVID19 crisis, San Francisco small businesses were burdened by too much red tape, making SF one of the most expensive and frustrating places in the nation to open and operate. This red tape put our small businesses at a huge disadvantage when trying to compete with mega corporations like Amazon. Post-pandemic we need to nurture mom & pop shops in our neighborhoods and do everything in our power to help them rebuild. While Prop H took a crucial first step in addressing major permitting and zoning issues that suffocated small businesses, we need to do more.

The SF Board of Supervisors is about to hear and vote on three critical pieces of legislation supported by the Mayor that will drastically help our small business community.

1. Places for People will allow small businesses to make their Shared Spaces permanent. Not only will this offer much needed revenue to businesses that were devastated by the pandemic, but it will fundamentally change how all residents can enjoy outdoor commercial spaces in SF.

2. The Small Business Recovery Act intelligently adds to the work of Prop H by further cutting the red tape around small business permitting. This will allow new businesses to open faster and existing businesses to adapt their business models quickly, saving small businesses owners precious capital and helping our corridors to rebuild.

3. Supervisor Hillary Ronen's soon-to-be-announced legislation will waive City fees for all first-time small business owners. We  urge departments to work with her office on this important initiative.

As we build back our neighborhoods post-pandemic, small businesses need your support now more than ever. We need to permanently activate our outdoor commercial spaces and to remove the red tape and endless fees that smother our mom & pop shops.

Thank you for your affirmative votes in support of Places for People, the Small Business Recovery Act, and Supervisor Ronen's small business fee legislation!
