Tell UWA Senate and the Vice Chancellor to treat staff fairly - make job cuts the last resort!
The University of Western Australia should be a community of free intellectual inquiry, and a safe and healthy place to work and study - but Vice Chancellor Amit Chakma wants to cut between 300 and 400 staff - and risk everything the University stands for.
Job cuts should always be the last resort. Staff should be openly, honestly and transparently consulted in all decisions that impact their working lives. Staff working conditions are student learning conditions.
There are always alternatives to job cuts, and better ways to serve the UWA community:
Cut executive salaries. Challenge the false economy of outsourcing and reliance on external consultants. Pursue redundancies only where work no longer exists - don’t penalise remaining staff with higher workloads. Prioritise open, honest, evidence-based and ground-up consultation with staff.
Staff cuts would harm the student experience, staff wellbeing, and the status and reputation of the University. We call on the Senate and the Vice Chancellor, as custodians of the University, to protect our UWA community, and look for savings elsewhere.
