We, the undersigned, urge the White House to take immediate action to preserve the SAVE Plan – the most affordable plan for millions of federal student loan borrowers.
We call upon the White House to:
- Ensure borrower access to all SAVE Plan benefits, including reduced monthly payments and capped interest.
- Preserve forgiveness to borrowers with original balances of $12,000 or less and to those who have earned Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) or Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) credits while enrolled in SAVE.
- Protect PSLF and IDR credit accrual for borrowers affected by SAVE-related forbearance.
- Provide timely, transparent, and consistent communication regarding repayment options and the status of the SAVE Plan.
More than seven million Americans enrolled in the SAVE Plan because it offered affordable, income-driven payments and safeguards against excessive interest. For many families, it created a clear and manageable path toward repayment and loan forgiveness. A recent Eighth Circuit Court decision has blocked any attempt to revive the SAVE plan – placing borrowers at risk of higher monthly payments, lost forgiveness credits, and increased financial strain.
As households face rising costs and economic uncertainty, preservation and access to affordable repayment options are essential. We urge the White House to defend and preserve the SAVE Plan to protect financial stability, ensure fairness, and restore confidence in the federal student loan system.
