Say No to gas drilling in North Yorkshire
North Yorkshire Council
We're in a climate crisis - this means we need to urgently reduce our carbon emissions.
New fossil fuel developments, such as extracting new gas, will add more emissions to the atmosphere, aren't compatible with tackling climate change and keep us hooked on fossil fuels instead of investing in clean and affordable renewable energy.
Despite this, Egdon Resources and Europa Oil and Gas plan to drill for gas at Burniston in North Yorkshire. The gas drilling, only 800m from the iconic North York Moors National Park, would involve a proppant squeeze - a form of hydraulic fracturing (or fracking) to inject fluids and ceramic beads to create rock fractures enabling trapped gas to flow to the surface.
We call on North Yorkshire Council to refuse Egdon Resources and Europa Oil and Gas plans for gas drilling at Burniston for the following reasons:
- Exploring for fossil fuels is incompatible with the urgent action required to tackle climate change.
- The plans, with hundreds of additional HGVs and 24 hour drilling, would be a major disruption for the local community.
- There is a significant risk to nature with the North York Moors National Park, a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) and a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) within a few hundred metres of the site.
- There is potential risk of air, water and soil pollution from industrial activities on the site.
