Say NO to Sonny Perdue being appointed to run the University System of Georgia

University System of Georgia

Nepotistic Sonny Perdue

Lord of Georgia, First of his Name, Sonny Perdue, has been a conservative politician for many years. First served from 1991 to 2002 as a State Senator, then 2 terms as Georgia Governor from 2003 to 2011, and lastly an appointed member of Donald Trump's Cabinet as the Secretary of Agriculture, for the USA from 2017 to 2021.

Here is a shortlist of many problems with Sonny Perdue's history:

  • In 2003, Perdue signed an executive order prohibiting himself and all other state employees from receiving gifts larger than $25 dollars in value. In his total 2 terms as Governor, Perdue received at least $25,000 dollars in gifts, including event tickets and airplane flights.
  • On March 29, 2005, late at night, Larry O'Neal (Perdue's personal lawyer AND state Representative) introduced legislation making capital gains tax owed on Georgia land sales deferrable if the income goes to the purchase of out-of-state land, and unusually making the break retroactive. As soon as it was signed into law by Perdue, he then used the new law to defer $100,000 in taxable gains from the sale of land.
  • In the time that Perdue was governor and enacting education reform, Georgia's SAT scores rose from 50th place in the states to 45th out of 50 states. He couldn't raise the state from last place to higher than 45th in the country in SAT scores in 8 years, what could he possibly do in this position?
  • During his governorship, the Georgia State Ethics Commission received thirteen ethics complaints against Perdue. They ruled against him twice, finding that he had taken improper campaign contributions from donors including SunTrust Banks(now Truist) and that he had improperly used one of his family business's airplanes on the campaign for which the commission fined him.
  • When Perdue could no longer seek reelection(due to term limits), he founded Perdue Partners, for exporting U.S. goods and services. While meeting with state port officials as Governor, Perdue discussed his family business's use of a terminal, and then immediately started a new export company as soon as he left office.

All and all, the list goes on, but we aren't here necessarily to pick apart Perdue's past, we are here to talk about Perdue's present and future. We as students, faculty, and their families, of the USG, have a right to be skeptical of someone with such a history of nepotistic tendencies and self-serving aspirations. Sonny and David Perdue, only care about themselves, and as such should not be in charge of our livelihoods(Public Health Policies are controlled by the USG), and our educations. On top of all of this, Perdue has a history of gutting public funding, while enriching himself and his family. As well, he has a very shady stain involving how he got appointed by Donald Trump for Secretary of Agriculture involving way underselling his property to another entity, which a few months later he was announced as being tapped for that position.

Above all, he is not qualified for this position. A lifelong politician, with no background in education whatsoever, is not only gross as a nomination but disrespectful to all those in this state that call education their passion.

We demand that Sonny Perdue's name be struck from the shortlist, and the Regents try again in finding a qualified candidate. We find it absolutely ridiculous that in a state with 10.85 million people, the ONE name given is an underqualified, nepotistic, self-serving politician that has already served more than his fair share of time in elected office.

We demand that Georgians get a say in who the Chancellor of our Education is.
