Send an inspirational and supportive message to Senator Ginny Burdick: Be our voice, let National Popular Vote legislation get a vote on the Senate floor in 2017!

Oregon Senate Majority Leader and Rules Committee Chair, Ginny Burdick

Legislation that would make votes cast for president in Oregon matter — by joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact — has been introduced every odd year since 2009 but has not been allowed to make it to the Senate Floor for a vote. This is strange since the Democratic Party of Oregon and the vast majority of Oregonians have been in support of passing National Popular Vote legislation for 7 years.

But this year is different. 2015 Cosponsor of National Popular Vote Legislation and first term Senate Majority Leader, Ginny Burdick has the power this year. If she scheduled HB 2927 for a work session in the Senate Rules Committee, which only she as Chair can do, Oregon will pass National Popular Vote legislation this year.

This weekend and next week, Senator Burdick needs to know how much we support her. The legislative session could end on the 5th, it could end on the 8th, the longest it can go is July 10th. The good news is she has supported this legislation in the past and has not publicly changed that stance to date. Senator Burdick has an exciting opportunity to prioritize the people's voice in her first term as Senate Majority Leader and clearly show her constituents that she wants their vote to count in the next presidential election.

So please take the time to not just sign the petition but to send Oregon Senate Rules Committee Chair, Senator Ginny Burdick an inspirational and supportive comment about why she is the perfect champion for National Popular Vote legislation and urge her to take this opportunity to ensure HB2927 gets a vote on the Oregon Senate floor in 2017.

Thank you for your support of National Popular Vote legislation. Please be a champion for the voice of Oregonians and allow HB 2927 to get a vote on the Senate floor in Salem this year by scheduling a work session for it in the Senate Rules Committee. Ending your first term as Senate Majority leader by prioritizing the voice of the people will demonstrate that you stand for your constituents first and foremost!

Because Oregonians have and still do want their votes to matter in presidential elections going forward. Passing HB2927 and joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact gets us so much closer to that reality.

The issues that matter most to us in Oregon like education, gun violence prevention, environmental protections for our beautiful state and strengthening democracy through legislation like Universal Voter Registration and National Popular Vote legislation deserve to be heard during presidential campaigns.

And although you are always a public servant for Oregonians, scheduling a work session for HB2927 would be an act of public service for the entire country. You can show other states that introduced National Popular Vote legislation, but weren't able to get it passed this year, what leadership and courage looks like and make it easier for them to follow in Oregon's footsteps next year.

Thank you so much for co sponsoring National Popular Vote legislation in 2015 as well as supporting Universal Voter Registration that same year. Let's make sure that as you stated in your tweet on May 25th of 2017 Oregon steps forward in this national movement!
