Show you my WHAT? Boycott Travel to Texas NOW.
Texas State Legislature
Petitions without discrete consequences are ineffective. So, here, we ask you non-Texans to pledge NO TRAVEL TO TEXAS until SB4, the 'show me your papers' law is REPEALED.
I spend about 60 hours a week as a community organizer with PSR (bounty.pantsuitrepublic.com) apart from taking care of patients (my day job). Most of that time I am working on dismantling this paragon of bigotry in Texas that deputizes rogue officers in local law enforcement - even campus police! - to devastate families and terrorize communities of color. On the ground, we already see mixed status families being forcibly divided, undocumented women deciding not to report domestic violence for fear of deportation, and families no-showing to clinic appointments and retiring WIC cards to avoid governmental registries. There is no way to tell an undocumented immigrant from an documented immigrant from a U.S. citizen. Police will unavoidably assume immigration status from the way a person looks, which results in racial profiling, a violation of the 14th Amendment. This law goes into effect on September 1, 2017. Can we get 100 people to boycott travel to Texas between now and then? How about 1,000? 10,000? 100,000?
Communities targeted are organizing to transform disgust and fear into political and electoral power. But, in the meantime, you can help us defeat this. Total direct travel spending in Texas was $68.7 billion in 2015. A widespread grassroots boycott is nontrivial. And Texas is a bellwether state for the decidedly anti-immigrant national political climate. You can be the change that matters, starting now.
