SIGN: Ask Louisiana State Senator Beth Mizell and Representative Beryl Amedee to withdraw their anti-trans legislation!

State Senator Beth Mizell (R-Franklinton) and State Representative Beryl Amedee (R-Houma)

We need your help NOW to #ProtectTransYouth. Senator Beth Mizell (R-Franklinton) and Representative Beryl Amedee (R-Houma) are proposing legislation to ban trans students in Louisiana from playing school sports.

Under this legislation, trans students would be systematically barred from participating in school sports with students of the same gender, and all student-athletes would be potentially subjected to invasive physical examinations--including genetic and hormonal testing--to prove their eligibility to compete.

This legislation is extremely harmful to all girls who participate in athletics and does nothing to make a fairer playing field for female athletes. Sign this petition today to ask Senator Mizell to withdraw this bill.

Dear Senator Mizell and Representative Amedee,

The undersigned individuals write to request that you withdraw Senate Bill 172 and House Bill 466. This legislation is harmful to all girls who participate in athletics and does nothing to make a fairer playing field for female athletes.

Participation in sports is an invaluable part of students’ physical, social, and emotional well-being. Playing sports can provide student-athletes with important lessons about leadership, self-discipline, teamwork, success, and failure—as well as the joy and shared excitement of being part of a team. Transgender athletes participate in sports for the same reasons as everyone else: to get and stay healthy, be part of a team, play the sport they love, and build a sense of belonging with their peers.

Multiple studies have shown that transgender people on hormone replacement therapy do not have an abnormal advantage over non-transgender people of the same gender. For this reason, numerous athletic and medical organizations (including the NCAA, American Medical Association, and the International Olympic Committee), as well as at least 25 other states, explicitly support allowing transgender people to compete on a fair playing field. There have been no problems reported elsewhere where inclusive policies have been in place for years.

Further, your legislation would subject girls and women, both transgender and non-transgender, to invasive coerced physical exams and genetic testing, which is a violation of all students' privacy and which threatens massive disruption to girls' and women's sports across Louisiana.

Please withdraw these bills.

Thank you.
