Republicans refuse to fund Amtrak as transportation infrastructure necessary to the nation's economy, insisting instead it should be a profit-making business.

Despite making campaign promises to fix our crumbling infrastructure, President Trump's proposed budget would slash federal funding for Amtrak.

But highways don't make a profit. They are funded by the government, and Amtrak should be funded in the same way. Many more tax dollars are spent in supporting the White House fleet of airplanes than is spent on the entire Amtrak budget.

Trump and House Republicans want to cut Amtrak's already record-low funding, even while deferred maintenance leads to more accidents and fatalities.
