Congress

Housing is a human right. All people in the U.S. deserve a warm home to come to every night, regardless of socioeconomic status.

At any given time, 568,000 people are experiencing houselessness in the United States. This means millions of people and families across the country experience houselessness each year -- and more than half of all houseless families are Black. The numbers are even more staggering if we take into account families that spend over a third of their monthly income on housing -- which means with any loss of income, these community members could face houselessness.

With the coronavirus pandemic raging on, the economic recession has exacerbated the economic and housing insecurity for so many.

As we enter the coldest months of the year, we need Congress to act quickly to secure safe, accessible, and affordable housing for all. Congress and state governments must also make corporate landlords pay for the cancellation of all housing-related expenses incurred during this pandemic, so households — and the economy more generally — can begin to recover financially.

This pandemic has laid bare economic and racial inequities in our country across the board, including in housing. With continuous stimulus bills needed not just in 2020, but in 2021 as well, we need elected officials to prioritize passing legislation that guarantees housing for ALL.

Even before the spread of COVID-19, nearly 47% of renters spent more than a third of their income on rent. The current rent crisis only makes it more clear that rising housing costs in our nation are unsustainable.

Fortunately, members of Congress don’t have to start from scratch. Several progressives on the Hill have introduced a series of housing bills that would protect renters from eviction by cancelling rent and mortgage payments for the duration of the pandemic, committing to a #HomesGuarantee for 12 million people by committing $1 trillion to public housing, and much more.

The time to act on the ongoing housing crisis is now. No more people should die in the U.S. for lack of housing. Congress must prioritize housing for all people in the country.
