Women in the United States today still make $500,000 to $1.2 million dollars less than their male co-workers over the course of their lifetimes.

On average, women make only 79 cents for every dollar a man makes. It's even worse for women of color ' African-American women make 60 cents and Latinas only 55 cents per dollar made by a white man. That's not acceptable.

Join CREDO and Daily Kos in urging state legislators to pass Equal Pay legislation this year to ensure women are paid equally for doing the same work as men.

Seven years ago, President Obama signed into law the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, allowing greater access to the courts for victims of wage discrimination. But our work is not done.

The wage gap is slowly shrinking, but at the current pace of change, it will be 100 years before the wage gap closes. Women and their families can't afford to wait.

State-based Equal Pay legislation can help create workplace wage transparency; prohibit retaliation against women who push back on wage discrimination; mandate equal pay for equal responsibilities and contributions in a workplace, regardless of job title; and strengthen the ability of employers to enforce equal pay regulations.

This year, state legislatures can make sure that women across the country will have the respect, dignity, and fair pay they deserve.
