U.S. Congress

Our country is suffering right now. In the U.S., tens of thousands have confirmed cases of COVID-19 and many have died as a result of the coronavirus.The national unemployment is projected to skyrocket to a whopping 30% -- nearly 3.3 million people have already filed for unemployment. A recession brought on by a pandemic makes it clear: Tying health insurance to employment is a disaster.

We need a healthcare system that works for everyone, not just those of us who can afford expensive out-of-pocket co-pays and private insurance premiums.

Fortunately, progressive leaders, with the support of grassroots movements and healthcare workers, have paved the way for expanded healthcare coverage with the Medicare for All Act. If passed, Medicare for All would:
  • Guarantee health care for all people in the U.S. regardless of employment status;
  • Provide relief from exorbitant out-of-pocket copays and prescription drug prices, which currently consume over 40% of the average Social Security check and are projected to consume over 50% by 2030;
  • Allow patients to choose physicians according to their actual health conditions;
  • Add dental, vision, hearing, and long-term care coverage, which are not included in traditional Medicare;
  • Preserve access to medical benefits and services through the Veterans Administration and the Indian Health Service.
Americans are past due for a healthcare system that prioritizes patient care and public health over lining the pockets of big pharma and healthcare CEOs. As our country responds to the global coronavirus pandemic and hundreds of thousands of Americans lose their jobs -- and as a result, their healthcare -- our elected officials must ensure all of us have access to quality healthcare.

The global coronavirus pandemic is changing life as we know it. Hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. have lost their jobs, senior and immunocompromised community members remain vulnerable if exposed to the coronavirus, and the unemployment rate is projected to skyrocket to 30%. We the people deserve access to healthcare without paying exorbitant out of pocket costs and navigating complex healthcare systems. In the wake of this public health crisis, for the sake of your constituents like me, I urge you to pass the Medicare for All Act.
