Amy Coney Barrett’s elevation to the Supreme Court cements a minority-rule crusade that goes back to Bush v. Gore.
If the Electoral College were ever to have utility, it would have been in 2016. Donald Trump was clearly unfit for the office of the Presidency, clearly corrupt, and received the votes of far fewer Americans than his opponent. But instead of protecting Americans from this disastrous President, the Electoral College was exactly the reason we’ve suffered for 4 years under Trump. The Electoral College was never a good idea, but the writing on the wall is clear: It’s got to go.
Here’s how the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact works: Every state who ratifies it commits its electors to the winner of the national popular vote--but it only goes into effect after states representing 270 electoral votes (enough to elect a President) have ratified it. Then, a majority of state electors will vote to elect the winner of the popular vote, no matter how their state votes.
Right now, the NPV has been passed in states representing 196 electoral votes. Barrett’s illegitimate confirmation should provide the motivation for the remaining 74 votes.
Imagine if our government was representative of us. Instead of looting democractic processes and holding superspreader events to keep their power, they would listen to the 1.1 million folks pushed out of the workforce by the pandemic and pass a relief package. We could ensure everyone has access to rapid testing, PPE, and find a way to safely open schools.
We could take on climate change give everyone health care including affordable abortion care, give everyone a living wage, protect LGBTQ, reduce gun violence, and prioritze public education. We could restore democracy.

The Electoral College has allowed Republicans to cement minority rule, with a 5-4 majority on the court now appointed by Presidents who lost the popular vote in their first election. Tell every state government to enact the National Popular Vote Compact and end the Electoral College!
