Sign Now: Demand Congress rid our democracy of “dark money” in our elections

All Members of U.S. Congress

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, since the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United decision in January 2010, “dark money” groups have spent more than $800 million to influence our country’s policies and elections.

The last major overhaul of election laws, nicknamed “McCain-Feingold,” was passed in 2002 and does not address this new reality of “dark money.” Standing in the way of meaningful reforms is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell who repeatedly opposes legislation that would provide the transparency and accountability so needed for political campaigns and elections.

Increasingly, American politics is being funded with secretive money from unknown sources. In too many cases, the purpose of the expenditures is to intentionally divide Americans. And according to U.S. intelligence is likely to result in a major foreign disinformation campaign in 2018’s upcoming midterm elections.

Stand with Issue One and sign the petition demanding Congress act immediately to rid our democracy of “dark money” groups and return our democracy to the American people.

Whether these “dark money” campaigns emanate from foreign countries or a handful of wealthy donors, it is critical that Congress take immediate bipartisan action to stop this assault on our democracy. Since January 2010, dark money groups have spent more than $800 million to influence our country’s politics and elections. It’s time for Congress to stop the undue influence of the moneyed interests and return our democracy to the American people. We demand that Congress update our out-of-date election laws, which are overmatched by the 21st century reality of cyber weapons and the disastrous Citizens United Supreme Court decision.
