U.S. Delegation to CITES CoP17

Elephants are being killed for their ivory at alarming rates. Now more than even their future in the wild is at risk.

Shutting down the sale of ivory is critical to stopping the poaching crisis, and right now we have a huge opportunity to do just that.

CITES CoP17 will begin soon. It's the world's most important meeting on internal wildlife trade and closing domestic ivory markets worldwide is on the agenda. But a win won't be easy. Some countries are pushing to continue ivory sales. We need the U.S. delegation to take a strong stand for closing domestic ivory markets, will you tell them to do the right thing and help secure a future for the elephants?

All legal domestic elephant ivory markets are a threat to elephants' survival.

The U.S. has taken strong action to close its own market, to help stop the poaching of elephants and trafficking in their ivory -- but with up to 96 African elephants being killed by poachers every single day for their ivory, it's not enough.

We need to show global leadership and encourage all countries to do the same.

I urge you to come out in strong support of the resolution submitted by African countries at CITES CoP17, encouraging all governments to close their domestic elephant ivory markets.
