Sign the petition: Congress must cancel Puerto Rico's mountainous debt

Members of Congress

Puerto Rico currently struggles against a mountain of debt, while still fighting to recover from a devastating hurricane.

Hurricane Maria caused an estimated $43 billion in damage, and the island now owes $70 billion to Wall Street bondholders. Its annual general fund budget is only $9 billion, and Puerto Rico is now in its 13th consecutive year of recession.

The demand to pay this colossal debt is cruel & unsustainable, and the answer is clear: Congress must wipe out Puerto Rico's debt so it can focus entirely on an adequate recovery. Several members of Congress introduced such measures in 2018, but with a Democratic Congress in 2019 we must make it a priority.

Puerto Rico cannot reasonably be expected to recover from a devastating hurricane and a 13-year recession, as long as bondholders control $70 billion of its debt. Congress has the power to eliminate all of its debts. I urge you to do so.
