Sign the petition: Demand Congress cancel all student debt to stimulate a sinking economy.

U.S. Congress

The global coronavirus pandemic has shaken communities everywhere with tens of thousands of known cases in the U.S. The World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention both have issued guidance strongly urging the government to enact social distancing and self-quarantining policies to slow the spread of COVID-19, leaving hundreds of thousands of residents across the country without jobs. With the national unemployment rate predicted to skyrocket to 30% and the stock market crash, our country is on the brink of an economic recession.

Not only are Americans forced to ration food and medicine supplies, losing access to healthcare, and scraping together monthly rent and mortgage payments, but 46 million have student loan payments to pay as well. Before the pandemic, advocates called for the student debt cancellation so millions of Americans wouldn’t have to choose between basic necessities and debt payments.

Now, everyday people need and deserve student debt cancellation now more than ever. Furthermore, freeing 46 million people of student debt is exactly the boost our economy needs as we enter the country’s second recession in 20 years. Student debt cancellation can boost our national GDP by up to $108 billion a year and would add up to 1.5 million jobs per year.

Our lawmakers must fulfill their responsibilities to constituents by cancelling all student debt immediately to provide relief for individuals and families and to stimulate our economy.
