U.S. Congress

We are a debt-ridden society. Americans owe a collective $1.6 trillion in student debt, and this crushing burden is even worse for Black Americans—who face additional barriers to accessing good paying jobs post-graduation.

In response to the rising costs of college education, the federal government created a loan repayment program that would eliminate student debt for graduates who pursue public interest careers for at least 10 years.

Slightly over a decade after the program’s inception, thousands of Americans who have or are about to reach 10 years of public service find out that their years of service to their communities are being told they do not qualify for the program. This is unconscionable. They’ve held up their end of the bargain. Now we must make sure our government does the same.

How can the American people send their children to college and graduate school, not knowing if the government will make good on its promise to support their public interest career?

With Trump’s Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos now leading the charge to create even more barriers to accessing the federal loan repayment program and income inequality ever-growing in this country, it’s time for Congressional leaders to step in and address justifiable concerns with the program and with student debt as a whole.

A majority of people in the U.S. support ending tuition hikes, eliminating student debt, and progressive presidential candidates vow to make college accessible and affordable to all Americans.

The federal government must make good on its promises to thousands of Americans and eliminate their student debt for choosing careers to empower their communities. Doing this would be the first step in securing livable futures for all Americans whose economic growth is crushed by student debt.

Collectively, Americans across the country are crushed by a whopping $1.6 trillion in student debt. And thousands have been betrayed by the federal government after it promised to eliminate their debt. I demand you provide relief to all Americans who entered the federal loan repayment program and have dedicated years of their life to public service. This will not only keep a promise made to them, but is a good first step toward eliminating all student debt. I am counting on you to help your constituents secure livable futures.
