Congress must pass a funding bill by Saturday night or the country faces another government shutdown.
The House just passed a funding bill, but there are two major issues Congress needs to address before leaving for the year: Senate Republicans have stripped protections for the healthcare and pensions of thousands of coal miners in the spending bill AND House Republicans removed the "Buy America" provision requiring infrastructure projects use U.S. iron and steel in a water bill.
Three Democratic senators, Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin (WV.), Sherrod Brown (OH) and Joe Donnelly (IN), all up for reelection in 2018, are threatening to hold up the bill until they receive a "permanent" fix for healthcare and pensions for coal miners.
Are we already seeing a Republican attack on the 2018 reelection bids of these three Senators? It seems likely.
Additionally, Sen. Chuck Schumer, the de facto Democratic leader, said that he's going to vote against the spending bill unless these two issues are addressed.
How telling is it that when Republicans shut down government it’s to try to take healthcare away from people, and when Democrats threaten to do it it’s to actually help people get healthcare? And jobs and pensions, to boot.
