Sign the petition: Denounce Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey for signing anti-abortion bill HB 314

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey

On May 14, Alabama state legislators passed the most restrictive and dangerous anti-abortion legislation in the United States. Less than 24 hours later, Republican Governor Kay Ivey signed it into law.

If HB 314 is not blocked in court, it is set to take effect in 6 months. It would ban every single abortion in Alabama, with one exception for pregnant people whose lives are at risk. The law also has no exceptions for cases of rape or incest, and to make matters even worse, doctors who provide abortion care could be prosecuted and jailed for up to 99 years.

If this sounds unconstitutional, that’s because it is—and Republicans know it. Their goal is to trigger legal challenges for unconstitutional anti-abortion bills to get them in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, which now has an anti-abortion majority.

The good news right now is that abortion is still legal in Alabama—and this law will almost certainly be blocked in court.

However, that doesn’t mean Governor Ivey is off the hook. In signing this bill, she signaled to Alabama and the world that she doesn’t care about pregnant people who may die if HB 314 is allowed to take effect.

This bill will not stop abortion in Alabama—it will only stop safe and legal abortion in Alabama. Governor Ivey knows that. Now, we need to let her know that we denounce her heinous betrayal.

Shame on you for signing HB 314 into law. This is the kind of cruel, heartless legislation that leaves pregnant people to die. We, and history, will never forget what you’ve done.
