24 House Democrats who voted for "Kate's Law"

In a cynical ploy to pander to anti-immigrant fears, the Republican U.S. House passed Kate's Law that imposes mandatory minimum sentences for undocumented immigrants who are charged with a crime.

As some experts have noted, Kate's Law would "suck up every dime you saved from criminal justice reform and negate." It is a dangerous step backwards, at a time when those on both sides of the spectrum have acknowledged that the War on Drugs failed—and we need to stop needlessly swelling our prison population.

We expect Republicans to pass such awful measures, but 24 House Democrats joined 233 House Republicans in voting "yes" on Kate's Law. Some even come from safe-blue districts where there was absolutely no politically expedient reason for doing so.

I expect Republicans to pass horrible legislation that panders to racist, anti-immigrant fears and needlessly swells our prison population. But as a Democrat, I should have expected more from you.
