Sign the petition: End the gag order on studying gun violence

Congress

Gun violence is a public health issue, but incredibly the Center for Disease Control is not even allowed to study it.

In 1996, Congress passed the Dickey Amendment after the NRA was upset at federal studies that showed a clear link between gun violence and public health.

The Dickey Amendment says "none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control.”

Not only do the bullying tactics of the NRA make it impossible to pass common-sense gun safety laws, they are even making it impossible for the federal government to STUDY the issue.

Former Republican Congressman Jay Dickey (who sponsored the amendment in 1996) now regrets having pushed it.

Sign the petition, urging Congress to repeal the Dickey Amendment.

It is outrageous that the NRA has made it impossible to pass gun safety laws. It is even worse that the federal government is not even allowed to study the issue. Please repeal the Dickey Amendment.
