Sign the petition: No wage cuts for tipped workers!

Colorado state and local officials

Right now, some state and local politicians are arguing that we need to cut the wages of tipped workers by thousands of dollars a year in order to make businesses more profitable -- which is clearly an absurd and terrible idea when so many working families are already struggling to make ends meet in Colorado.

The Democratic Party of Denver said:
"[On 2/11], a bill was introduced that would immediately cut the pay of nearly every tipped worker in the city. It’s being framed as a way to “save restaurants,” but in reality, it does so at the expense of workers who are already some of the most underpaid, undervalued, and vulnerable to wage theft... Our city runs on the labor of these workers—they deserve fair pay, not another financial hit."

And Denver Auditor Tim O'Brien warned that:
"This bill would almost immediately cut [tipped workers'] wages further. In Denver, it would force City Council to slash earnings by $4 per hour for one of the most vulnerable groups of workers. For a full-time employee, this would reduce weekly earnings by $160, monthly earnings by $640, and annual wages by $8,320. This is money these people need for food, rent, utilities, transportation, daycare, doctor’s visits, diapers, formula, and all the other necessities of modern life.... We have all been told that there is a crisis and that restaurants in Denver are closing in droves. I am not persuaded by this narrative. But I and my team know of real crises that affect Denver’s workers every day: wage theft, inflation, high rent, economic insecurity, and all the evils of poverty together combine to make the American Dream harder than ever to obtain. This legislation will make these problems worse."

We urge Colorado's state and local officials to reject any effort that would reduce the wages of tipped workers. With the rising cost of living, many working people are already struggling to pay for essential things like rent, food, and medicine. Your job as someone who represents us is to stand up for working families, not to throw workers under the bus by slashing wages, and we call on you to firmly and publicly oppose any policies that would result in wage cuts.
