Sign the petition: Sick and poor people must not be kicked off Medicaid

In one of its most heartless moves yet, the Trump Administration is allowing states to force Medicaid applicants to work or prepare for jobs in order to receive any health coverage.

A program that has long been the "safety net" of health insurance for the poorest of the poor could now have a work requirement. Even though 91% of Medicaid recipients are (a) sick or disabled, (b) currently in school, (c) taking care of a family member or (d) retired.

Ten states—Arizona, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Utah and Wisconsin—have already filed requests to start kicking people off health insurance if they don't apply for jobs. It's very possible that more states will do so.

I am outraged that Medicaid—a program designed to provide crucial health insurance for the poorest of the poor—may start kicking people off for failing to apply for jobs. The vast majority of Medicaid recipients are unable to work due to age, disability or student status.
