Sign the petition: Stop Trump’s hiding of COVID-19 data

Congress

The COVID-19 pandemic response has been a DISASTER under Trump’s leadership. Now, he’s trying to cover up future data in order to downplay the actual emergency.

In July 2020, Trump's administration established new, mandatory guidelines for hospitals to report COVID-19 patient information that eliminates the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the leader of data collection. In what they call an effort to ‘streamline the reporting process’, Trump ordered hospitals to send patient information to a centralized database operated by Health and Human Services (HHS).

In other words, states were told they must immediately stop sending hospital information to the CDC which makes that data public.

Since the pandemic began, the CDC has regularly published data on availability of hospital beds and intensive care units across the country. Now, the CDC has announced its data would not be updated past July 14.

The absence of the data will make it harder for health and public officials, as well as the general public, to understand how the virus is spreading. This is extremely disturbing!

Trump continues to insist that the growing surge of cases, including overrun hospitals and rising deaths is somehow the fault of more testing, not his poor response and attempts to discredit the pandemic. And with this new move, Trump plans to downplay the crisis by hiding the data from the American people.

We are in danger of losing accurate tracking of COVID-19 cases, recoveries, and deaths if the order by the Trump administration is implemented without intervention by Congress. We cannot allow the numbers to be downplayed or doctored in order to boost Trump’s image.

Trump’s latest maneuver to switch data reporting collection methods in the middle of the pandemic is completely disturbing and dangerous. This is an obvious attempt to downplay the pandemic that is currently overrunning many states in the U.S. It is your job to ensure we receive full transparency and have full access to the ACTUAL COVID-19 data. We demand you enact legislation to require all COVID-19 be reported to the CDC and made public, in addition to the HHS.
