Sign the petition: Tell Senator McConnell to allow a vote on Supreme Court nominees

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

UPDATE (Wednesday, March 16, 2016 11:15 ET): President Obama has nominated Merrick Garland to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court seat.

Just hours after the news broke of Justice Antonin Scalia's untimely death, GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell declared that he'll reject any nominee President Obama tries to appoint to the seat.

President Obama has almost a year left in office and is constitutionally bound to nominate a justice to fill Scalia's seat. There is no precedent for this type of obstruction.

The Supreme Court is currently hearing cases that will set federal precedent for labor unions, the right to choose, affirmative action, the environment and more. Because of the partisan breakdown of the Court, it's likely that decisions will be split 4-4' meaning lower court decisions will stand unless Republican appointee Chief Justice John Roberts orders cases to be re-argued at a later date. We don't have time for partisan games, there is work to be done.

Sign the petition to Senator McConnell: Don't halt the work of the Court. Allow the Senate to vote on President Obama's Supreme Court nominee.

Threatening to block President Obama's Supreme Court nominee on partisan grounds is an unprecedented low for Republicans. Don't hold the court hostage. Fulfill your duty to hold votes on a presidential nominee.
