Sign the Petition: Tell South Dakota's governor to veto hateful anti-trans bill

South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard

Last week South Dakota became the first state to pass a discriminatory anti-transgender bill. The bill would force transgender children to use public school restrooms that correspond with their “biological sex” or be segregated into private restrooms away from their classmates.

This legislation stands to set a dangerous precedent. Transgender youth are already bullied, harassed, and assaulted at alarming rates by people who refuse to respect their identity. House Bill 1008 not only fails to provide safer schools for these vulnerable children, it legally discriminates against them.

South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard has not yet signed the bill into law. There is still time to act.

Responding to pressure from LGBT rights groups, Governor Daugaard has met with transgender South Dakotans to “put a human face” on the issue while he weighs his decision. While it’s important that the governor is taking time to hear from people who will be impacted by this decision, we still need to take immediate action.

If Governor Daugaard does not veto House Bill 1008 by March 1, it will automatically become law. Stand with transgender youth and make your voice heard now.

Transgender youth are already targets for bullying and violence. Public schools should be safe for all students. This bathroom legislation discriminates against trans youth and further ostracizes them. Veto this hateful bill now.
