U.S. Congress

Join Daily Kos and Friends of the Earth to call on your Congressperson to commit to vote no on the toxic Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

After years of negotiations conducted under extraordinary secrecy, the TPP final text would not only fail to protect our environment, but would actually threaten our air, water, and climate.

The TPP would offer thousands of new foreign firms virtually the same broad rights included in past deals that have enabled big polluters to use private tribunals to challenge safeguards for our air, water, and climate. TransCanada is currently threatening to use virtually the same rules included in TPP to sue the United States government for over $15 billion because of the rejection of the dangerous Keystone XL Pipeline.

The pact would require the U.S. Department of Energy to automatically approve all exports of natural gas to countries in the pact, thereby removing the ability of our government to make decisions about our energy future while expanding dangerous fracking and climate disrupting emissions.

And finally, while the TPP’s environment chapter might look nice on the surface, many of the actual obligations are very weak. Moreover, history gives us no reason to believe that any of the TPP rules on conservation challenges such as the illegal timber or wildlife trade would ever be enforced.

Vote NO on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

We can and must do better. Trade agreements should be used to help countries achieve their climate goals and reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. The TPP would take us in the opposite direction.
