Sign the petition to Mitch McConnell: Honor John Lewis’s legacy and bring the Voting Rights Advancement Act to a floor vote

Mitch McConnell & the Senate

On July 17, 2020, freedom fighter Rep. John Lewis passed away after over half a century of dedicated struggle and stirring “good trouble” for Black freedom and social justice in the U.S.

The passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is a key moment in the long battle for racial justice in this country. Civil Rights pioneers like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Robert Lewis struggled for freedom and justice for all Black people.

Fast-forward to 2013, after the Supreme Court’s Shelby v. Holder decision on the Voting Rights Act, Republican-controlled states almost immediately enacted racist voter-ID laws and shut down hundreds of polling locations in primarily Black neighborhoods, ensuring that it would be incredibly burdensome for Black and Brown citizens to vote.

Civil Rights heroes like John Lewis dutifully fought to protect and expand rights for Black people, immigrants, and communities. Meanwhile, Republicans like Mitch McConnell shamefully continue to attack voting rights nationwide.

We cannot continue to let Republicans get away with decades of racist attacks on our access to the ballot box. It is up to us to fulfill John Lewis’ legacy and get the Voting Rights Advancement Act passed to restore voting rights taken away in 2013. Our communities deserve access to the ballot box. And fortunately, there is a clear path forward.

The House of Representatives has already passed the legislation; it’s time for the Senate to follow suit. We must put pressure on Mitch McConnell to do his job and bring this historic legislation to a full vote in the Senate to restore voting rights nationwide.
