U.S. Congress

Update: On Friday, May 29, Trump announced "that the U.S. will be terminating its relationship with the World Health Organization". The U.S. is the largest source of financial support to the WHO, contributing $450 million, and its exit is expected to significantly impact the organization.

On April 14, Trump announced that he would cut funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a time when the U.S. is experiencing the most lethal pandemic since the Spanish Influenza, we need to prioritize health and science. Right now, we need to ensure people in the U.S. have access to quality healthcare including rapid COVID-19 testing -- and the WHO has been at the forefront of the global response.

Trump, on the other hand, has been woefully inadequate in his response to the pandemic. From the very beginning, Trump has neglected the American people with no remorse. Decisions like delaying the distribution of the National Stockpile of ventilators, ending all immigration to the U.S., encouraging states to reopen amidst armed protests, and refusing international support for more advanced COVID-19 tests do not come without a human cost.

Several hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. are sick and tens of thousands have lost their lives to this illness. Healthcare workers and other essential workers are on the frontlines keeping our country afloat as the economy sinks. We need our country’s leaders to prioritize our health and our lives. If anything, our lawmakers should consider increasing funding to the WHO, not taking it away.
