In recent weeks, a handful of politicians in Congress have been accused of sexual harassment, and some (like John Conyers) have started to resign.

Congress members don’t get a free pass just because they’re elected officials. It’s clear we need to hold our Senators and Representatives accountable for their actions — and California Representative Jackie Speier has an idea for how to do just that.

At the Women Rule Summit, Representative Speier said we need to establish an office to investigate sexual harassment claims in Congress.

Speier and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also introduced the METOO Act, which would streamline the process sexual harassment victims go through to report incidents on Capitol Hill. The legislation includes lawmakers and staffers, and also covers congressional interns, who are not covered under current policies.

Survivors should not need to jump through dozens of hoops to report sexual harassment. We need to ensure that survivors are heard and that perpetrators of sexual violence are held accountable.
