The White House, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and U.S. Department of Justice

The Trump administration via the U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services is looking to limit the definition of gender to sex assigned at birth.

This change would essentially eliminate federal recognition of an estimated 1.4 million Americans, including 20,900 Louisianans, who are transgender, in order to roll back protections from discrimination.

The change is in direct conflict with the positions of every major medical association in the country, including the American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, and American Psychological Association, who all agree that gender identity is a determinant of a person's sex.

The proposal by HHS is not about science, but rather about dehumanizing and singling out transgender people as second-class citizens undeserving of the civil rights afforded to others.

We stand opposed to any legal change that would narrow the federal government's definition of gender.

This change would essentially eliminate federal recognition of an estimated 1.4 million Americans, including 20,900 Louisianans, who are transgender, in order to roll back our only protections from discrimination. The change is in direct conflict with the positions of every major medical association in the country, including the American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, and American Psychological Association, who all agree that gender identity is a determinant of a person's sex.

This proposal is not about science, but rather about dehumanizing and singling out transgender people as second-class citizens undeserving of the civil rights afforded to others.

We, the signers of this letter, stand with transgender Louisianans and transgender people throughout our country in pursuit of the core human rights of self-determination and expression.
