Signatures needed: Laughing at Jeff Sessions is not a crime

U.S. Attorneys

At the Senate confirmation hearing of Jeff Sessions back in January, Alabama Senator Richard Shelby introduced Sessions as having a record of "treating all Americans equally under the law."

That was too much for activist Desiree Fairooz, who burst out laughing from the audience.

U.S. Capitol Police promptly arrested Fairooz for "disorderly and disruptive conduct" and intending to "impede, disrupt and disturb the orderly conduct" of a Senate hearing.

Other audience members who laughed at other parts of the hearing were not arrested--and it would have been ridiculous, frightening and totalitarian if they had been.

Incredibly, the U.S. Attorneys—who as Justice Department employees now work for Attorney General Jeff Sessions—prosecuted Fairooz. She now faces up to a year in prison.

I am shocked, disgusted and appalled that the Justice Department would use its discretion to eject an audience member for laughing at what was clearly an absurd statement & then prosecute her for up to a year in prison.
