Signatures needed: Reduce bottled water waste in our National Parks

Congress

For years, hundreds of thousands of supporters like you have been part of a movement supporting national parks to stop selling single-use plastic water bottles, which contribute to the 500 billion single-use plastic bottles used around the world every year. As a result, national parks across the country eliminated single-use plastic water bottle sales and increased access to drinkable tap water.

But in 2017, the Trump administration rescinded the National Park Service’s voluntary guidelines for ending the sale of single-use plastic water bottles in spite of well-documented evidence that these policies were tremendously effective at reducing waste in our parks.

Our national parks stand as symbols of sustainability, conservation, and environmental education for the millions of park-goers that visit them annually. In order to preserve these lands, national parks across the country must phase out the sale of this wasteful product and instead improve water access for visitors by installing hydration stations.

Rep. Mike Quigley introduced a bill that would reinstate this National Park Service policy, giving parks a pathway to ending the sale of single-use plastic water bottles. The Reducing Waste in National Parks Act reverses the Trump administration’s decision and allows National Park Service regional directors to implement bottled water bottle free policies after thorough feasibility studies. This sends a strong message to the Trump administration and the bottled water industry that we will not stand for rampant corporate interference.

Congress must stand up to the Trump administration and the bottled water industry!

We urge you to support The Reducing Waste in National Parks Act, which would reinstate a National Park Service policy which gives parks a pathway to ending the sale of single-use, plastic water bottles. The Trump administration recently rescinded guidelines that outline how parks can implement these bottled-water-free policies. Eliminating this policy provides no benefit to park-goers nor to our national parks and threatens to reverse the progress parks have made on reducing their waste streams. We are calling on you to stand up to bottled water corporations by supporting legislation that protects our public lands and waters for the enjoyment of generations to come.
