Solving the TKES Problem

Georgia State Legislators

Georgia students are at risk of losing veteran educators and the ability to recruit new talented teachers in the classroom because of a deficient evaluation system known as Teacher Keys Effectiveness System (TKES).  As if fostering the future isn’t hard enough, Georgia teachers have to contend with a nebulous evaluation system that uses inappropriate measures and doesn’t even offer an appeals process. If this seems unfair to you, join us and sign a petition to support legislation that would improve TKES for all Georgia educators and the students that depend on them.

I know and understand the importance of having a means of evaluating the effectiveness of educators to better gauge strengths as well as areas needing development for teachers. Additionally, I support the Georgia Department of Education’s efforts to update and improve the educator evaluation system to ensure a fair, objective and effective statewide evaluation system. However, I strongly feel that there needs to be TKES legislation put forth that will:

- Require the GA DOE and the PSC to establish rules and policies with standards for educators seeking to remediate performance deficiencies
- Ensure that GA State Board of Education certified evaluators are used for performance evaluations
- Eliminate or reduce the use of student assessment tools (e.g., end of grade testing, student surveys) being inappropriately used for teacher evaluations
- Address the use of “ineffective” ratings in Fair Dismissal hearings
- Provide an appeal process when evaluation procedures are violated

Thank you in advance for helping teachers at being more effective in providing a quality education for Georgia students.
