South32: Meet with the women of Phola!

South32 Board and Executive

Sign the petition calling on South32 to meet with women from Phola and address their concerns about the Klipspruit coal mine.

Australian mining company South32 operates the Klipspruit coal mine in South Africa, just a few kilometres away from the community of Phola.

Women in Phola are deeply concerned by the impacts of mining on their community, and in 2018 launched a year-long investigation to uncover the truth about the Klipspruit mine.

So far, women from the Greater Phola Ogies Women’s Forum have uncovered that:

  • The vast majority have witnessed an increase in gender-based violence since mining has begun in their area.
  • Women have observed an increase in water and air pollution, cracks in their houses caused by blasts from the mine site, serious health impacts, and ongoing unemployment.
  • 92% of those interviewed said they have raised their issues with the mine, but feel South32 has responded poorly.

The women in Phola are now requesting again that South32 meet with them to address their concerns. Will you get behind them?
