Support Connecticut legislation to prevent public secondary schools from starting too early in the morning
Connecticut House of Representatives, Senate and Governor
Why is this important?
The circadian rhythm shift of adolescence makes it difficult for the vast majority of teens to fall asleep early. When combined with too-early school start times, the result is sleep deprivation. As noted above, a start time of 8:30 a.m. or later has been shown to be the single best way to address this.
To a large extent, school start times have been dictated by external factors such as bus schedules, and were established before researchers had identified the numerous risks of developmentally misaligned school hours.
Healthy school start times are a public health issue and an academic issue. In Connecticut, nearly all of the state's ~190 public high schools start before the 8:30 a.m. recommendation. In fact, Connecticut has the second earliest average high school start times in the U.S., at around 7:39 a.m.! This requires students needing to wake at 6 a.m. or even earlier! One district even reverted BACK to unhealthy school start times! We need to implement healthy start times for all of the 490,000+ students in our public schools – not just those in districts willing to make the change of their own accord.

Schools that start too early in the morning have plagued communities for decades. Contributing to the teen sleep health and mental health epidemic, it is essential for school systems to create schedules that are consistent with teen biology.
While there have been some districts that have made the change, competing interests often trump this essential change, which benefits teens, their families and whole communities.
Please consider issuing legislation so that local school systems can have safe guardrails when creating their school schedules. Decades of school students and their families have suffered needlessly with a change that is feasible and has been successful with committed leaders throughout the country. Many school administrators have asked for help and legislation would make school start time a non-negotiable priority.
