The threats it faces are great - from drought to increased demand from the massive population it supplies, our river is vulnerable.

You hold the future of our rivers in your hands. Therefore, you hold Westerners’ future in your hands. Over the past several years, local water leaders – with the support of federal agencies - made considerable progress toward water conservation and programs that reduce overuse of the West’s rivers. However, the White House’s current proposed budget threatens to slide back on these vital wins.
Cutting funding to critical programs that help local leaders, like the Bureau of Reclamations’ System Conservation Program, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Regional Conservation Partnership Program, as well as the Department of Interior’s WaterSMART program and Title XVI grants for municipal conservation and efficiency efforts could reverse progress made by states, cities, and farmers to reduce water consumption in the Colorado River Basin.
It is vital that the White House continues the leadership of previous bipartisan efforts in moving the Colorado Basin toward more sustainable water planning.
We ask you to revise your budget and adequately fund the Department of Interior (DOI) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA), as well as continue to provide support for the efforts of the West’s efforts to intelligently manage its water – for our economies, lives, and food. These agencies have provided critical support, leadership and financial resources for innovative water savings and transfer projects to conserve and share the region’s water assets, which is needed now more than ever.
