CNBC just reported that Amazon is launching the largest corporate surveillance program in human history.
The tech giant is equipping every delivery vehicle with artificial intelligence (AI) four lens cameras that record, whether or not the vehicle is in motion. The cameras capture footage from the road, both sides of the vehicle, and the driver—tracking the driver’s eye movement and recording everything outside the rear windows. The AI collects and analyzes data in real time, and then uploads the video.
For everyone, Amazon will have roaming eyes in every neighborhood, shopping center, and intersection in our communities. They will be watching everyone including your kids. Along with the millions of Ring doorbell cams, floodlight cams, and mailbox cams, Amazon will have the perfect panopticon in place to sweep up unprecedented amounts of data en masse. They already have 2,000+ partnerships with law enforcement and it seems super likely that they'll start sharing footage from their vehicles the same way they share from Ring cameras—giving them access to license plates, biometric data, and enabling them to use facial recognition to track anyone’s movements across neighborhoods and cities. Beyond fueling the expansion of the police surveillance state, this means even if you don't use Amazon you're going to be in their system, being monitored, and targeted.
For the delivery drivers, it means their face, eyes, and everything they do during their 10-hour shift is being tracked. If they do something that Amazon deems problematic, like stopping abruptly because a kid’s ball rolled into the street, an alert is triggered and the AI analyses their action.
This level of control is dangerous. Drivers concerned with how alerts impact their performance will be more focused on the surveillance cam than the road. Managers will be able to use recorded video to spy on workers, creating an environment ripe for harassment and abuse. Given Amazon’s obsession with squeezing every drop out of their employees, the footage collected will be used to find ways for the drivers to cut corners and deliver packages more quickly.
If this wasn’t bad enough, Amazon won’t answer any questions about how footage is secured. So, it seems pretty likely that the connection between the camera and Amazon's "portal" is not end-to-end encrypted. This major security risk makes all footage collected vulnerable to cyber-crime and hacks. Cyber-criminals have already exploited insecure Ring devices. They will be looking for these security weaknesses. It’s only a matter of time before there is a major breach of some kind.
Amazon’s ever-expanding surveillance empire is a disaster. We need to act and save ourselves from the dangers it poses to all of us.
