Democracy Cannot Be Bought!

An image of the Houses of Parliament overlaid with falling money and a sinister looming Elon Musk

Billionaires are gaining too much power over our democracy and the new elections bill isn't strong enough to stop them.

We need stronger laws to prevent democracy being bought

The super-rich have acquired huge amounts of new wealth over the last 10 years and they're using it to manipulate our political system. It's not just Elon Musk threatening to donate $100 million to Reform; it's UK billionaires bankrolling shady companies to funnel money to friendly politicians, prominent donors getting seats in the House of Lords, and armies of lobbyists treating MPs to hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of donations.

This problem is getting worse. We know that large donations have a growing power: over two-thirds of all political donations in 2023 came from just 19 people. On top of that, we know that our media is even more concentrated in the hands of billionaires than it used to be.

But the new Representation of the People Bill doesn't go far enough to stop this. Although it'll cut off one key way for foreign donors to influence elections through shell companies, it doesn't tackle the influence of big money. A crypto billionaire based in Thailand will still be able to donate £9 million to Reform, for example, under these new rules.

We need you to sign now to demand a strong bill that kicks the influence of big money out of politics. Every name – including yours – makes a difference.

Why act now?

The Representation of the People Bill is a huge opportunity to turn the UK's democracy around and kick big money out of politics.

This would be good for all of us. The super-rich are working incredibly hard to rig our system, and they'll welcome the fact that this bill leaves them untouched.

In the 2026 local elections, super-rich donors will have a huge chance to entrench more inequality into UK's political system. We need to fix the system before the next general election.

What do we want?

This petition is calling for the Representation of the People Bill to include laws that would limit the ability of the super rich to directly influence politics. These are:

  1. An immediate ban on overseas donations without loopholes.
  2. Ban large donations to political parties outright with a strict cap of less than £5000 per person per year.
  3. Get rid of loopholes that allow payments to be routed through family members, shell entities, or corporate vehicles.
  4. Real power for the Electoral Commission to investigate and punish wrongdoing.

In the longer term, we need real reform of the House of Lords and Commons to crack down on cronyism, break up oligarch media monopolies, and build new systems that put people at the heart of democracy.
