Stop the NFL’s Dangerous Play for Facial Recognition
The National Football League (NFL)
Did you know that when NFL stadium workers enter the locker rooms or playing field, their faces are scanned and stored in a mass biometric database owned by a private company that can sell or share that data with the police?
The NFL uses facial recognition technology to manage access to restricted areas of their arenas for employees and members of the press, forcing them to submit their sensitive biometric data in order to do their jobs.
The use of facial recognition in the workplace allows employers to watch workers’ every move, creating a culture of spying and distrust. On top of the invasive tracking, facial recognition also puts workers’ identities and sensitive data at risk of privacy violations. Unlike a credit card number, you can’t change your face if it’s stolen. When companies store such sensitive data in massive databases, it becomes a juicy target for hackers. This tech has no place anywhere, much less sports stadiums, and it must be stopped.
The NFL’s use of facial recognition to surveil workers is just the latest example of this dangerous tech infiltrating stadiums. Whether it’s in the form of worker surveillance, ticketing, or concession stands payments, facial recognition puts people in danger at every turn. We need to oppose this tech in arenas and everywhere. Demand the NFL cancel its facial recognition program for stadium workers and commit to keeping arenas free of dangerous biometric surveillance. Stand up for employee privacy and against the spread of invasive surveillance technology by signing the petition.

I call on the NFL to stop requiring stadium workers and members of the press to submit to facial recognition just to keep their jobs, and should broadly reject the use of facial recognition in stadiums for players, staff, and fans. Facial recognition puts people’s sensitive data at risk of being breached, stolen, and sold. Plus, it’s entirely unnecessary.
