Stop the No Fresh Air Bill

The Victorian Government is proposing amendments to the Corrections Act which remove the right of prisoners to one hour of time in the open air each day.
This will weaken the legal minimum standards for people in custody, and breaches the United Nations Mandela Rules and Victoria’s own Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities.
Extended periods of solitary confinement can have extremely serious physical and psychological consequences and there is a real risk these changes increase the chance of people dying in custody.
Our prisons are already under enormous pressure with the Adult Time for Violent Crime laws and changes to bail resulting in an influx of vulnerable people on remand. This is a State created problem which is having significantly detrimental impact on people who are incarcerated. The No Air Bill will exacerbate this harm.
The reason these rights exist is because respecting people's human rights saves lives.
So help us oppose the No Fresh Air Bill - join the rally on the steps of the Victorian Parliament at 12:45 on the 12th of August and tell your state MP that you believe every Victorian deserves to see the sky.

I'm writing to you to ask that you vote against the Corrections Amendment Bill 2026, which would remove the entitlement of people in prison to at least one hour of daily outdoor time.
These amendments are inconsistent with the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 and with the United Nations Mandela Rules, the globally endorsed baseline for the humane treatment of prisoners.
Denying people in custody access to open air is inhumane and I am worried that it will lead to serious physical and psychological consequences.
Almost all the people in our justice system will ultimately be returned to the community and extended periods of solitary confinement make it harder for people to reintegrate into the community and have a catastrophic impact on mental health.
Please do the right thing and vote against this inhumane legislation.
