Dear Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary,
We are writing as Israeli citizens living in the UK, many of whom hold British citizenship. We are watching in horror the images coming from Gaza of malnourished babies and children. Since the 2nd of March 2025, Israel's hard-right government has banned all aid from entering the Gaza Strip. For more than two months now, no food has been allowed in. This hermetic siege is by far the longest and harshest ever to be imposed on the Strip.
The World Food Programme, which helped feed half of Gaza's population, ran out of food on the 25th of April. UNICEF warned that humanitarian aid which has provided the only lifeline for children, "is now close to running out." With farmlands destroyed by Israel, the 2+ million population is almost entirely dependent on food coming from the outside. Medications are also running out, and clean water is in short supply.
In a joint statement on the 23rd of April, the foreign ministers of the UK, France and Germany, stated that "Palestinian civilians - including one million children – face an acute risk of starvation, epidemic disease and death." They called Netanyahu's policies "intolerable" and "unacceptable."
Netanyahu's government, the most extreme in Israel's history, is determined to pursue the war indefinitely - against the wishes of the Israeli public. A clear majority in Israel supports a ceasefire and the return of the hostages. We know, from testimonies of released hostages, that famine in Gaza affects also the Israeli hostages there. That has not deterred the extremists in power from pursuing the most punitive blockade.
As the Israeli cabinet voted yesterday to renew its assault on the Strip, it approved tentative plans to allow in limited humanitarian aid under Israeli control yet stated this would only become operationalised "if necessary." The UN warned that even were this plan to be implemented, it would mean “large parts of Gaza … will continue to go without supplies.” All this suggests that without urgent international intervention, the Israeli cabinet is determined to continue using starvation as a weapon of war.
Pleading with Netanyahu's rogue government will not do. The prospect of mass starvation in Gaza is imminent and intolerable. The UK must take immediate and concrete measures to stop this catastrophe before it gets any worse. Now is the time to go beyond rhetoric, and take unprecedented measures, before starvation kills hundreds and thousands. We call on the UK to suspend the Trade and Partnership Agreement (TPA) with Israel until it allows food and medicine into Gaza in significant quantities.
We call on the UK government not to be complicit in criminal mass starvation. We cannot stand silently and watch this unfold, without taking actual and concrete steps to end it.
The assault on Gaza must end; the hostages must be released.
