Stop the TPP and the Global Race to the Bottom

US Congress

It’s time to demand international wage standards. As American workers have seen their wages plunge in a global race to the bottom, it is clear that the greatest challenges we face in our communities are part of a broader global crisis. And global problems require global solutions. At The People’s Lobby we believe that one crucial step in the right direction is to create a global minimum wage. A global minimum wage would protect the well-being of workers both in poorer countries and here in the U.S.

The current version of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) fails to set legally-binding minimum wage standards for signatory countries. This makes the TPP unacceptable. Without real standards, wages in poor countries will continue to be far below a living wage, and the global race to the bottom will continue.

Congress must refuse to ratify the TPP, or any other trade deals that lack legally-binding minimum wage standards.

In order to protect workers both in the U.S. and around the world, it is crucial that all future international trade agreements include legally-binding minimum wage standards. I therefore urge you to vote no on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Although the TPP requires all signatory countries to adopt a minimum wage, it does not set any standards for how high the minimum wage must be. This allows countries (especially poor countries) to set minimum wages at a very low level, which undermines the very idea of international wage standards. Without real minimum wage standards, the TPP will intensify the global race-to-the-bottom in wages which has created so much suffering for workers both in the U.S. and abroad. Because of this, I urge you to vote no on the TPP.
